The SwabSURE Salmonella Detection Kit provides food manufacturers and processors with a rapid, ready-to-use, and cost-effective method for detecting Salmonella spp. on food contact surfaces and manufacturing equipment. A simple colour change from pale purple to black delivers a presumptive result within 18 to 24 hours, making it ideal for routine hygiene monitoring as part of any GMP or HACCP programme.

SwabSURE Pathogen Detection Kits are intended for the detection of important food pathogens on food contact surfaces in food handling and manufacturing environments where regular disinfecting and sanitising is performed. Routine sampling for pathogens is a fundamental component of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and essential for maintaining a HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) plan.

The kit consists of two components: a pre-moistened swab containing TSC Neutralising Buffer, which neutralises the effects of common cleaning solutions while improving bacterial recovery from dry surfaces; and a highly specific chromogenic detection media that delivers clear visual results via colour change within 18 to 24 hours.

Bacteria are recovered from food manufacturing or processing equipment surfaces using the pre-moistened swab. The swab is then transferred into the organism-specific media, which contains a convenient break point for easy deposition. Once incubated, any target organism triggers an unambiguous colour change from pale purple to black, indicating a presumptive positive result for Salmonella spp.

In environments where disinfectant or sanitiser residues are present, the TSC Neutralising Buffer within the swab neutralises common compounds including peroxides, phenols, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), amphoterics, chlorines, and associated halogens. This ensures accurate results are not masked by surface cleaning residues.

The kit meets the requirements of ISO 18593:2018 and is compliant with USDA, FSIS, and BAM requirements. Unlike similar methods, no pre-enrichment step is required. A positive result can be acted on immediately, and where confirmation is required, the broth can be used directly with standard microbiological or molecular methods, either in-house or via an external laboratory.

Step

Action

Detail

Step 1

Identify sampling site

Select the surface or equipment to be tested. Use the sampling template for accurate, reproducible results where possible.

Step 2

Open the swab

Hold the swab with both hands. Pull down and twist the swab cap away from the tube, breaking the security seal in the process.

Step 3

Remove the swab

Remove the swab from the tube using the cap as a holder. Do not touch the swab tip or shaft, and do not allow it to contact any surface before sampling. Do not discard the tube.

Step 4

Sample the surface

Swab the designated area using the template where possible. Swab in three planes (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) whilst rotating the swab between forefinger and thumb.

Step 5

Return swab to tube

Once sampling is complete, re-insert the swab into the tube and push the cap on tightly.

Step 6

Label and store (delayed test)

Write sample details on the tube label. Store at 4 to 8°C and send to the laboratory within 24 hours to initiate the colour test.

Step 7

Initiate test (immediate test)

Alternatively, immediately insert the swab into the media tube until the breakpoint is level with the top of the vial. Pull down on the swab shaft whilst holding the tube straight to activate the breakpoint. Replace cap and agitate lightly.

Step 8

Incubate

Place tubes vertically in a suitable rack and incubate at 36 ± 1°C.

Step 9

Read results

Read results after 18 to 24 hours. No colour change: negative. Colour change from pale purple to black: presumptive positive for Salmonella spp.

Step 10

Confirm positive (if required)

Confirm using the positive liquid in a validated rapid test, or subculture onto XLD or chromogenic Salmonella agar and examine after 18 to 24 hours for typical colonies. PCR methods and EIA or rapid tests (after isolation) are also suitable.
