HyServe GmbH, based in Munich, plays a leading role in integrating sustainability into microbiological testing. As a provider of hygiene monitoring and rapid diagnostics, the company advances eco-conscious innovation while serving critical industries like food safety, healthcare, water testing, and industrial hygiene.

Our role is to challenge and redefine traditional laboratory standards, which have historically been resource intensive. We actively support development and promote solutions that significantly reduce plastic waste from consumables, lower energy consumption through more efficient methodologies and equipment, and decrease reliance on hazardous chemical reagents. By leading this shift, Hyserve not only provides clients with highly accurate and reliable testing results but also empowers them to meet their corporate sustainability targets, proving that ecological responsibility can and should enhance, rather than compromise, scientific excellence.

HyServe’s commitment to sustainability begins with product innovation that minimizes environmental impact without compromising performance. By designing ready-to-use media like Easy Plates, which eliminate the need for preparation and sterilization, we reduce energy, water, and material consumption while cutting down on laboratory waste. Our LED-based calibration tools replace hazardous radioactive ATP kits, offering safer, non-toxic alternatives for users and the environment. Devices like the Lumitester Smart further support this mission by delivering rapid hygiene validation in just 10 seconds, lowering both testing time and energy usage.

Building on these innovations, HyServe actively reduces laboratory waste and emissions through smart material choices. Shelf-stable dry media powders and bacterial swabs require less packaging and handling, while dry-format products eliminate refrigeration needs, significantly decreasing transport-related emissions. Wherever possible, our swab kits and plates incorporate recycled plastics or are designed to minimize plastic use altogether.

This product-centric approach is complemented by our support for circular and low-toxicity lab environments. By minimizing hazardous substances, we simplify waste disposal and ensure compliance with Germany’s Waste Management Act (KrWG).

HyServe’s sustainability strategy also reflects alignment with national and regional goals. Our low-energy diagnostics contribute to Bavaria’s 2045 climate neutrality targets, while our waste-reducing designs and packaging support circular economy principles. By avoiding radioactive materials, we advance the EU Green Deal’s objectives for safer chemical use, and our pathogen detection technologies play a vital role in protecting biodiversity and clean water resources.

Underlying all these efforts is HyServe’s unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. We are dedicated to long-term environmental stewardship, consistently refining our diagnostics to be more efficient, safer, and less wasteful. Through this holistic approach, we ensure that microbiological testing not only meets customer expectations but also contributes meaningfully to planetary health.

The Imperative for Sustainability

Sustainability has become a non-negotiable priority in today’s industrial landscape, driven by a convergence of regulatory mandates, evolving customer expectations, and a deepening sense of environmental responsibility. Governments and international bodies are enforcing stricter regulations on emissions, waste management, and resource efficiency, making sustainable practices essential for compliance and continued operation.

At the same time, customers are increasingly aligning their procurement decisions with their own sustainability goals, seeking suppliers who demonstrate transparency and commitment to eco-friendly practices. These external pressures are reinforced by a broader corporate duty to reduce ecological impact and contribute to global environmental well-being. Together, these forces position sustainability as a cornerstone of business integrity and long-term viability. This section outlines how key sustainability is for our company.

1. Regulatory Requirements

HyServe operates in a demanding regulatory environment shaped by national and regional environmental laws. Our processes and products are designed to meet the highest standards of quality and sustainability. As part of these efforts, HyServe is working specifically to further develop and validate its activities in line with ISO certification.

2. Customer Expectations

Our customers are increasingly valuing sustainability in their purchasing decisions. They expect diagnostic solutions that are safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly. Non-toxic and non-radioactive materials, ready-to-use test kits that avoid waste, and test systems that save energy and time are particularly in demand. Transparency is equally important—because our customers want to work with partners whose values and environmental goals match their own..

3. Environmental responsibility

HyServe consistently integrates environmental responsibility into product design and business processes. Our LED-based, non-radioactive calibration kits reduce hazardous waste. Dry media minimize packaging and disposal costs, while our testing systems significantly reduce energy and water consumption. In addition, lightweight product designs help reduce transport emissions—another step toward climate-friendly diagnostics.

HyServe & Partners – Demonstrable progress toward more sustainable products

As part of our commitment to measurable environmental progress, Kikkoman Biochemifa has worked with Itochu Plastics to further develop the LuciPac series and switch to biomass-based polypropylene. This innovation is in line with international climate and sustainability goals, CO₂ reduction strategies, and certified standards..

1. Biomass-based transformation of the LuciPac series

Since September 2023, the LuciPac series (ATP test reagent – Kikkoman A3), which is distributed by HyServe GmbH, has been made entirely from biomass-based polypropylene. This replaces conventional petroleum-based plastics with sustainable alternatives derived from renewable raw materials such as agricultural waste, food scraps, or used cooking oil.

2. Certification according to ISCC PLUS

The conversion has been verified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) – a globally recognized standard for bio-based, circular, and renewable materials throughout the entire supply chain. The certification ensures complete traceability from raw material to final packaging.

  • License number: ISCC-L-81
  • Material supplier: SK geo centric Co., Ltd. (Korea)
  • Certified Partner: ITOCHU Plastics Inc.

3. Mass Balance Approach

The biomass-based polypropylene is tracked according to the internationally recognized mass balance principle. This process allows renewable and non-renewable raw materials to be combined in the production process, while the sustainable share is mathematically calculated and certified as being attributed to the end product.

4. Public Communication and Certification Validity

It is important to clarify that the LuciPac Series’ environmental improvements are supported by ISCC PLUS certification, which is legally valid and publicly traceable. The certification label is applied to the product polyethylene outer bag, and while not printed on the aluminum pouch, the entire packaged product is covered under the certification license.
